18/10/18 - v John Spence

posted Oct 21, 2018, 10:15 AM by Moorbridge PRU   [ updated Oct 21, 2018, 10:17 AM ]

Another fantastic afternoon in the sunshine over at John Spence, where we took a mix of our Moorbridge Sports Academy boys and girls for a 9-a-side football game. We had some debut's in the side as well as some of our girls who played the previous afternoon in the CVL.

For large parts of the game Moorbridge Sports Academy dominated possession, moving it quickly from side to side with all players getting involved. After playing out from the back Moorbridge broke forward with some great attacking football and JJ put Moorbridge ahead with a fantastic finish.

Shortly after the break John Spence came back into the game and unfortunately they received a penalty for a tackle inside the box to the amazement of some of the defenders. They despatched it into the back of the net, quickly after that they went through again and scored a great goal into the bottom corner past Harvey.

Moorbridge Sports Academy continued to try and play fast attacking football, Brandon who played out from the back with a ball down the line to Gary who beat his defender and got a cross in the box towards Tasha. She took a fantastic touch on the edge and laid it off towards Kaylee who dispatched this into the back of the goal with a fantastic left footed strike.

A couple of substitutions took place and Moorbridge pushed for the winner, Tasha who pressured for the full game was unlucky not to come away with 2 or 3 goals. However she managed to win the ball in the corner after challenging the defender and a few passes around the box later the ball managed to find her feet and she sweetly struck it into the bottom right hand corner out of the reach of the goalkeeper.

Moorbridge Sports Academy not only had their first girls football only team, but we also competed in the mainstream U16 CVL at John Spence. We played two very strong sides with girls who consistently play for teams around the North East as well as an England International.

The girls played two games on the afternoon against Whitley Bay High School and John Spence, they were both excellent games played in the right spirit with some fantastic football on show. The girls have the right to hold their heads high especially with most of the team still in KS3.

16/10/18 - U16 Wanderers Football Tournament

posted Oct 21, 2018, 4:39 AM by Moorbridge PRU   [ updated Oct 21, 2018, 10:00 AM ]

Moorbridge Sports Academy attended the U16 Senior Wanderers Football Tournament at Walker Activity Dome, a tournament that we finished 3rd place twice in 2017/18. We entered one team into the U16's category with a mix of boys and girls.

There were 10 teams in the U16 category as well as another 10 teams at U14 with over 160+ pupils participating on the day. We had arrived at the venue a little before 10am and the team wanted to get on the pitches and get warmed up as quick as possible. The quick movement, passing and working on shape fluidity before helped us transfer very quickly into the games.

Our 8 players were fantastic throughout and the determination, encouragement, sportsmanship as well as the constant positive vibe around the team showed. We often struggled in the past around lunch time however this wasn't the case as time they battled for each other, passed and moved the ball around the pitch Man City like, we were commended on our play style and how much various staff members from other schools enjoyed watching.

Our students had a fantastic opportunity on Wednesday to attend CrossFit Tyneside, Ben put on a fantastic session in which our students had to work together as well as individually in order to complete various movements, tasks and objectives. They all completed the basic training methods that Ben coached throughout the session and will be moving onto some more complex movements next time.

The event was a great success for both our boys and girls teams as Cross Country is definitely not a sport that everyone enjoys. There was over 15 schools in attendance and 200+ participants on the morning. 27/09/18 – This Girls Future Conference

posted Oct 8, 2018, 12:13 PM by Moorbridge PRU   [ updated Oct 8, 2018, 12:50 PM ]

Moorbridge Sports Academy attended a conference that was aimed at girls who would benefit from attending a day that reinforced the role of exercise as part of a healthy lifestyle, and for whom positive intervention may encourage participation; and also those, who may consider a career pathway in a sports or leisure related industry.

The event that took place at Benfield School seen over 20 schools and 250+ pupils gain a valuable insight into the sports industry and how many different pathways that they could choose in the future.

Katy Storie opened the event and gave us a great insight into the ups and downs of her childhood, her ballet stories as well as getting involved with weightlifting. She advised all of the girls in the sports hall to be open minded and try many new sports as they may find something that they enjoy and can even turn into a profession just as she did.

The girls then had various workshops to attend throughout the day which included;

·      University choices for sport, numerous degrees and chances for volunteering.
·      Clubbercise
·      Sprinting session with Laura Weightman
·      Netball and handball from qualified coaches with teams in the region.
·      Nutritional advice.

The conference finished off with an excellent closing address from Laura Weightman, Team GB’s 1500m runner. Who like Katy, shared her personal story of ups and downs as well as how various teachers and other support made her the person that she is today.
